Abstract Hentai—Japanese explicit anime and manga—has evolved from erotic art and shunga to a globalized media genre. This paper outlines its historical development, thematic patterns, production/distribution mechanisms, cultural reception in Japan and internationally, legal and ethical issues (including depiction of minors and consent), and directions for scholarly research.
