The film is based on a true story and takes place during the Battle of Stalingrad in 1942. Vasily Grossman, a young Soviet sniper, is tasked with taking out a German sniper who has been terrorizing the Soviet troops. The German sniper, Erwin König, is a skilled and ruthless opponent who has been using his skills to kill Soviet soldiers with impunity.
